What are anime, manga, and manhwa? What activities will the club do?
The Japanese Anime Manga Manhwa Club (JAMM) is a club for anime and manga lovers and for those who want to learn about anime and manga. It's also a club for students who want to learn more about Japanese and Korean culture, language, and much more! However, like all clubs at PHS, JAMM is a club for making new friends that have a common interest or curiosity about anime and manga. Of course, for those who don't know about anime and manga and may be wondering, what exactly are anime, manga, and manhwa? Anime is literally an abbreviation of the Japanese word for animation, animeeshon (or ƒAƒjƒ[ƒVƒ‡ƒ“). However, anime are Japanese cartoons drawn with a particular style. Most anime are based off of manga. Manga means "comic" in Japanese, and, in English, refers to Japanese comics. What makes it unique is that it is usually published in the original Japanese format, from right-to-left. These comics are sold in the U.S. after being translated into English or any other language. Manhwa, on the other hand, is actually Korean. The term "manhwa" refers to Korean print comics and sometimes can include Korean animated cartoons, as well. It is written in the Western format, left-to-right. It is typically written in Korean, but many publishing companies translate it into many other languages, such as English.
Of course, no club is a club without activities! There will be many activities that we plan on participating in. Because JAMM is primarily an anime/manga/manhwa club, some of our activities will include reading manga and manhwa, watching anime, and drawing. We plan on discussing anime, manga, and manhwa as or after we read or watch it. We also want to have the option for some members to learn about Japanese and Korean language and culture, which can include listening to Japanese and Korean music. In addition to drawing, we're even willing teach anime-style drawing to students who are interested. Some other activity options include making and dressing in the costumes of various anime and manga characters or traditional clothes of various Asian countries. We'd also like to try making traditional foods, and we'll be more than happy to share! Lastly, we're also hoping to attend Anime Central, or ACen, which is an anime/manga convention held in Rosemont in May every year. Some of us would also like to someday travel to Japan.
